Liquid/Liquid Extraction
Environmental Applications
Chem Elut can easily be used to perform environmental liquid/liquid extractions. The benefits of improved reproducibility and no emulsion formation streamline environmental sample processing.
General Chem Elut Procedure
Hydromatrix is excellent for drying applications, or as a solid support for Supercritical Fluid Extraction (SFE) and Pressurized Fluid Extraction (PFE). PFE has been popularized by Dionex Corporation as Accelerated Solvent Extraction (ASE).
Drying Tubes
Hydromatrix has excellent water-absorbing properties, and can be used to dry organic extracts prior to analysis. The capacity of Hydromatrix for water absorption is equal to approximately twice its mass.

SFE and ASE Extractions
The extraction efficiency in SFE and ASE is greatly affected by moisture in the sample. Hydromatrix is a natural choice for a solid support due to its ability to absorb moisture from the sample, disperse the sample evenly, and allow the fluid or solvent to reproducibly solubilize the analytes. Hydromatrix minimizes the loss of volatile analytes, and allows these extractions to be performed quickly and easily.
One of the most popular applications for Hydromatrix in ASE is US EPA SW-846 Method 3545A, for the analysis of
- BNA’s
- OCP’s, OPP’s
- chlorinated herbicides
- PCB’s
- polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins
- polychlorinated dibenzofurans
- total petroleum hydrocarbons
This complex analysis of many classes of contaminants is greatly simplified by using Hydromatrix as a solid support for ASE.
Hydromatrix is also useful for many other solid samples which are very difficult to process adequately by other sample preparation methods. Samples such as homogenized tissue, fat, oil, aqueous solutions, powders, and creams are mixed with Hydromatrix before packing into the SFE or ASE cell. The amount of Hydromatrix required depends on the moisture content. |
