Chromguard Columns
The Chromguard columns are used to protect your conventional analytical column. The Chromguard system includes two replacement cartridges for convenience.
Just like in the ChromSep system, these cartridges are easily replaced without special tools. The Chromguard housing can be reused which results in a significant cost savings over the life of an analytical column. The high efficiency guards are 10 mm length while the high capacity guards are 50 mm long.

Valuable analytical columns are easily destroyed by impurities in the sample. Placing an inexpensive guard column before the analytical column to trap the impurities can prevent this.
The guard column can easily be replaced while your analytical column lasts for a long time. ChromSep columns are standard equipped with a guard column. For use with other conventional columns Varian supplies short Chromguard columns in a separate ChromSep type housing.
No Effect on Chromatography
As shown by the two figures, the use of a Chromguard column does not affect the chromatographic retention nor the peak shape. This means that the only contribution from the guard column is to absorb material in the sample that might be retained indefinitely; just what a guard column was meant to do.
